Eric Jakubowski, ASQ Chicago Section Chair, will lead the honoring of the Section’s Veterans and Veterans at large.

Post Dinner Meeting – 8:00 PM:

Stuart Kleven, a Quality Engineer and Nondestructive Testing (NDT) expert will highlight NDT methods used and the progress of the work being performed before and during the restoration of the Confederate Submarine, The Hunley!

H%20L%20Hunley%20MockupThe Confederacy, during the Civil War, was one of the first to use a submarine in naval warfare. The Hunley was pressed into action to break the Union blockade of Charleston harbor. It sank during a battle and was recently recovered over 130 years later. Nondestructive testing was used to evaluate the structure prior to and during restoration. The work on the Hunley has been the focus of several National Geographic TV specials and magazine articles. A made for TV movie also re-created the events of the Hunley a couple years ago. For additional information see The FRIENDS of The HUNLEY.

Stuart Kleven, Quality Engineer at Alloyweld Inspection Company, Bensenville, Illinois

Stuart Kleven is a quality engineer at Alloyweld Inspection Company, a nondestructive testing laboratory, metal finishing and welding shop. He is an ASNT Level 3 in four test methods as well as an AWS CWI (American Welding Society, Certified Weld Inspector). He has almost 40 years of experience in nondestructive testing in the commercial laboratory, welding and fabrication, forging and nuclear power industries. Currently, he serves on the ASTM (American Society For Testing and Materials) E7 committee for radiography, liquid penetrant and magnetic particle inspection. He is also on the board for the local Chicago Section of ASNT (American Society For nondestructive Testing).

The Position:  In a newly created growth role, the Quality Manager will coordinate company quality processes, interact with customers on quality and warranty issues, and have full oversight responsibility for the ISO certification process.  Working with Engineering and Production, this leader will assist with the implementation of all customer specific work orders, quality plans, and acceptance test plans to ensure full compliance with customer quality expectations for each job.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the ISO Quality Manual, Quality Procedures and Forms so they are all current and represent the “say what we do, do what we say and prove it” ISO culture.
  • Pursue a Continuous Improvement philosophy by providing input to Production, Engineering and Purchasing regarding quality related improvement opportunities.
  • Support the Sales and Engineering Teams by providing the appropriate Quality input for each project/job.
  • Assure the proper Quality oversight, input and support is provided to the Production Department.
  • Support the implementation of Servant Leadership principles by actively participating and leading by example.
  • Acts as a customer/supplier liaison on quality related matters. Participates in product and process development and improvement reviews. Implements, monitors and assesses product performance, using statistical techniques, as required, and ensures the generation of required reports in a timely basis.
  • Independently seek, identify, & document continuous improvement (CI) opportunities throughout the plant 

Position Requirements:

  • 5-10 years experience in progressive quality leadership roles
  • Strong working knowledge of ISO9001
  • Demonstrated experience with Lean, 5S, continuous improvement
  • Track record of successful quality process implementation
  • Hands-on leadership style – direct involvement on the shop floor
  • Comfort level in an environment that requires strong interpersonal skills, ethics and integrity, a positive business demeanor and temperament, and accountability
  • Ability to work customers to quickly resolve quality issues, proactively implement procedures to ensure quality expectations are met & exceeded
  • Analytical skill – a problem solver who excels in root cause analysis
  • Cultural change agent able to obtain buy-in, train, and change the quality mindset
  • Process & metrics driven with a proactive approach and focused on accountability and results
  • Cross-functional team player who works/interacts well with all functional areas
  • Computer software skill with MS Office, MS Project, engineering software
